摘要
The rapid growth of AI infrastructure has increased freshwater demand in global data centers due to the cooling requirements of high-density GPU clusters. While carbon emissions from AI systems receive major regulatory attention, water consumption remains largely overlooked despite its impact on water-stressed communities and ecosystems. This chapter examines the hidden water footprint of AI data centers across three scopes: direct cooling water use (Scope 1), indirect water use from electricity generation (Scope 2), and embodied water in hardware manufacturing (Scope 3). It reviews cooling technologies such as air cooling, liquid cooling, and immersion cooling. It also analyzes intelligent optimization methods, including reinforcement learning controllers, digital twins, and IoT-based predictive maintenance. Regional disparities are explored with emphasis on water-stressed regions and Africa. Policy measures and future research directions are discussed for sustainable AI infrastructure.
