The Preacher and his People

Abstract This chapter focuses on preachers and sermons. Arthur Dent's Theologus believed that preaching and cathechising were the means to feed Christ's sheep and save souls. Effective preachers are those who expound a ‘doctrine’ and then discuss its ‘use’, its application to his own congregation: ‘others only inform but reform not, because they speak too generally and preach as if they meant other persons and not their present auditory’.
