Some recent studies of water mist fire suppression technology in China were introduced, and the measurements of water mist characteristics, methods of generating water mist and fire suppression experiments were summarized in detail. The extinguishing mechanisms and future works of water mist were also discussed. Characteristics of water mist strongly influence fire suppression effectiveness. The LDV/APV, DPIV and advanced DPIVS systems were used to measure the spray characteristics. To varying degrees, the traditional water mist nozzles have disadvantages. Therefore, new methods of generating water mist (i. e. effervescent atomization) were investigated and different kinds of nozzles were compared. In order to study the fire suppression effectiveness in different fire scenarios, small-scale and full-scale experiments were performed.
