Ecological footprint model is a good method for evaluating the sustainable development and exploitation of resources.It has been widely used in regional ecological capacity and sustainability estimation.Energy ecological footprint model can make up the deficiencies of ecological footprint.In the present study the energy ecological footprint model was used to evaluate the sustainability of the development of Chongqing in 2007.The results showed that per capita energy ecological footprint was 6.331 hm2/cap,ecological carrying capacity was 1.602 hm2/cap,and ecological deficit was 5.729 hm2/cap.The ecological footprint value exceeded its carrying capacity,which indicated that the social and economic development of the study area was not sustainable.
