Before embarking on the main topic of corrosion control and prevention, this chapter considers the economics of corrosion control methods. Corrosion control methods consist of protective coatings, corrosion-resistant metals and alloys, corrosion inhibitors, polymers, anodic and cathode protection, corrosion control services, corrosion research and development, and education and training. Corrosion control and prevention may take the form of a design detail, such as the application of corrosion allowance to sophisticated lining systems and cathodic protection (CP) devices. There are two types of CP: sacrificial anode CP and impressed-current CP. The chapter discusses the most commonly used corrosion control methods for drinking water systems. It presents the typical causes and sources of corrosion in aircraft. Corrosion control methods used in this industrial sector consist of equipment design, process design, and the use of corrosion inhibitors.
