Severe Respiratory Depression Following Talwin

Severe respiratory depression occurred in a 41-year-old woman with underlying respiratory insufficiency, after she received 30 mg of pentazocine (Talwin®) intramuscularly. This drug can cause significant respiratory depression and should be used with the same precautions as narcotics in patients with limited respiratory reserve.
