Catechol and ferulic acid derivatives are naturally occurring substances found in fruits, vegetables and flowers and are consumed as dietary phenolic compounds. Several previous studies reported that catechol and ferulic acid derivatives have potentials for various biological activities. The present study was designed to investigate the anti‐inflammatory effects of catechol and ferulic acid derivatives in Raw 264.7 cells. The anti‐inflammatory activities of catechol and ferulic acid derivatives investigated by analyzing NO and PGE 2 production, inducible nitric oxide synthase(iNOS), and cyclooxygenase‐2 (COX‐2)expression as a biomarker in Raw 264.7 macrophage cell demonstrated that caffeic acid phenethyl ester, carnosic acid, ferulic acid ethyl ester, 6‐shogaol significantly attenuated the production of NO and PGE 2 and the expression of iNOS and COX‐2, indicating that the reduction in NO and PGE 2 formation may be attributed to suppression of iNOS and COX‐2 expression resulting from the control of NF‐κB activation with IKK modification. These results propose that these compounds could be used as a potential natural source for the treatment of oxidative stress and related diseases.
