Flame Retardant Treatment of Soybean Protein Fiber with Hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene

Soybean protein fiber is a new type synthetic fiber.It is sensitive to flame.In the present paper,soybean protein fiber and soybean protein fiber/cotton blend were flame retardant treated with hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene,then their flame retardant and thermal properties were studied by limiting oxygen index(LOI),char yield,thermal analysis and Scanning electron microscopy(SEM).The results indicate that the treated soybean protein fiber and the blend have higher LOI and char yield values,lower T_e,smaller velocity of heat release in decomposition,decreased activation energies and swollen char layer compared with the untreated fibers,which meant their flame retardant properties are effectively improved.
