Objective To evaluate the method of blood culture to isolate Penicillium marneffei from HIV patients.Methods Blood from two different parts of patients were put into two BD aerobic blood culture bottles,cultured by BD 9240 instrument.If fungal spores or hypha on the smear were found,the instrument would alarm and blood samples were initially cultured with Sabouraud agar medium and blood plate respectively at 35℃ and 25℃ When filamentous colonies formed in due course,they were cultured in two kinds of Sabouraud agar medium,and observed daily on colony morphology changes with lactic acid phenolic cotton blue staining.Results There were 6 strains of Penicillium marneffei isolated from 63 cases of HIV patients with blood culture.Conclusion HIV Patients were easily infected with Penicillium marneffei and bacteriology laboratory should be alert to run for the timely detection of Penicillium marneffe.
