Traditional pipeline coatings have very limited use on pipelines that operate at temperatures above 65°C (150°F). As production and transport temperatures increase, pipeline coatings must be able to perform accordingly. Presently, the product must be cooled before it can be transported in pipelines, because most coating systems would fail at the operating temperature. Pipeline coatings must perform at these higher temperatures in conjunction with cathodic protection to allow companies to produce and transport products at high internal temperatures. This article discusses the development and testing of a new pipeline coating system that can be field-applied to existing hot pipelines or to new pipelines that will later operate at high temperatures.
