Surviving Genocide and Overcoming Collective Trauma: Yezidis from Sinjar in the Aftermath of 2014

In addition to collective trauma from the genocide begun by the Islamic State organization (ISIS) in August 2014, Yezidis from Iraq’s Sinjar District still face a number of obstacles in the way of their healing process: security issues, lack of legal accountability, no appropriate representation in state institutions, and continuation of discrimination. As Sinjar is the last remaining area with a Yezidi majority, collectively overcoming the trauma of genocide would help ensure that Yezidis remain as a people in the Middle East.
