With the ongoing development of urban construction, the exploitation of underground and underwater environments has witnessed acceleration, driving a growing demand for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) under extreme conditions. The unique challenges posed by these environments, including severe constraints on the quality of the wireless channel, distinguish these networks from conventional WSNs. In addition, existing technological solutions do not fully address the impact of poor channel quality on network performance. In light of these considerations, we propose the concept of Wireless Weak-link Sensor Networks (WWSNs). Despite the potential benefits of WWSNs, research in this area remains limited and not enough attention is paid to security considerations. To address the diverse security threats inherent in WWSNs, we delineate the multifaceted safety requirements and propose corresponding strategies. First, we address privacy risks by developing a lightweight encryption algorithm tailored for weak link scenarios. Specifically, we employ an optimized homomorphic algorithm to ensure secure communication under constrained conditions. Next, given the vulnerability of sensor nodes to intrusion and counterfeiting attacks, we design a robust authentication algorithm to mitigate these threats. Building upon these foundational measures, we introduce a trust management mechanism incorporating a simplified fuzzy control model. This mechanism mitigates the prevalent security vulnerabilities that affect network nodes and reinforces the proposed encryption and authentication protocols. Finally, we conduct an in-depth analysis of the challenges and future directions of WWSNs, paving the way for improved security and performance in these networks.
