Epidemiology of childhood cancer

Epidemiology is the study of the occurrence, patterns, causes and outcomes of disease. This chapter describes the incidence of childhood cancer, including the temporal trends observed over recent decades, its causes, survival and late effects outcomes in general terms. It defines and explains important epidemiological measures including incidence, prevalence, mortality and survival outcomes, and measures of effect. Different types of epidemiological study design are outlined briefly.
