Artificial self‐assembling systems for gene therapy

Abstract Over the last decade, a variety of nonviral systems have been developed as an alternative to recombinant viruses for gene delivery. The challenge nowadays is to design improved chemical vectors for more efficient in vivo transfection. Sophisticated multifunctional systems in which each component enables the DNA complex to overcome a critical cellular barrier may be the answer. Such “artificial viruses” may form clinically useful transfection vectors in the future.
