An evaluation to the effects of preserved sclera with glycerin

Objective:The study was designed to evaluate the effects of preserved sclera with glycerin and to prove the security of the sclera.Methods:To observe the histopathologic characteristics,the tissue sections of both the rabbit and human’s fresh sclera and the sclera preserved with glycerin were made.Scleral homografts were undergone on rabbits’eyes and their tissue sections were also done.Glycerin of preserved selera was examined with the microbiology method.Results:The rabbit and human’s fresh sclera and the sclera preserved with glycerin had same histological structure under the light and electron microscope.The healing results of sclera homografts in these eyes of rabbits showed that there exited adherence between recipient and donator,no grafts was rejected.And no bacterium was found in the culture medium of glycerin of preserved sclera for long periods.Conclusion:Sclera can be safely preserved by glycerin.
