Establishment and assessment of native Chinese affective video system

Objective:To provide a set of native and standardized video stimuli materials for emotional study.Method:On the basis of length,intelligibility and discreteness,30 video clips which attempt to elicit each of 6 emotional states(anger,fear,sadness,disgust,happiness and neutral)were selected from 48 collected diversiform video clips.Then,50 Chinese university students rated the arousal,emotion valence and discreteness of the video clips by self-reporting on the basis of three 5-point self-reported rating scales,including the scale of the emotional arousal,the Positive and Negative Affect Scale(PANAS),and the Differential Emotion Scale(DES).Results:Except for the neutral category,all of the other 5 emotional video categories elicited strong emotion reactions,and the negative emotion were stronger than the positive[e.g.,on the arousal scale,sadness(3.118±0.053)vs.happiness(2.673±0.055),P0.001].Men reported greater levels of target emotions than women [e.g.,on the arousal scale,men(2.852±0.038)vs.women(2.620±0.062),P0.05].Except for the disgust category,the subjects who had seen the video previously reported greater levels of tar get emotions than those who had not seen the video previously[e.g.,on the arousal scale,for the fear video clips,Seen previously(3.231±0.107)vs.Not seen previously(2.815±0.057),P0.001].Finally,18 specific criteria which would be chosen by researchers were established.Conclusion:These video clips,which elicit strong and different emotional reactions,can provide normalized stimulant materials for research in emotion.Further studies are needed to improve the quality of the native affective video system.
