Cough variant asthma(CVA) is a special subset of bronchial asthma with chronic cough as the principal or unique presentation. Its distinct clinical manifestations may result in diagnostic errors and mistreatment. Some researches indicate that CVA is basically similar to classic asthma(CA) in pathology and pathophysiology, and may develop into CA in some patients.Studies of CVA may contribute to a further insight into the pathogenesis of asthma,so as to improve the life quality of CVA patients, refrain its progress to CA,and slow down the impairment of lung function. This review focuses on the pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of CVA.
