Damage to articular cartilage is a common problem in animals. Articular cartilage rarely re-forms a hyaline surface after injury. Most simple articular cartilage damage never heals completely, and this remains unchanged over time. Deeper articular cartilage lesions, extending into the suhchondral bony plate result in fibrocartilage formation. Poor quality of articular cartilage healing has led to the development of pharmacological and surgical methods aimed at improving the surface repair process. The article describes various methods of treating articular cartilage injuries in animals.
