Objective To study the changes of the IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α, IFN-γ, Apo-1/Fas of the patients with the essential hypertension (EH group) complicated with cardiac dysfunction, and to explore the relation of cardiac function with cytokines. Methods The serum levels of cytokines were assayed with ELISA in 60 hypertensive cases and 20 normal controls and the left ventricular systolic and diastolic functions were measured by color Doppler. At the same time, the relation of cardiac function with cytokines was analyzed. Results Compared with control group, the serum levels of cytokines increased significantly, and the degree of increase was consistent with heart failure in EH group. There also existed correlation between the decrease of heart function and the increase of cytokine levels in EH group. Conclusions In patients with essential hypertension complicated with cardiac dysfunction, there were excess activation of cytokines and cardiac cell apoptosis that were consistent with heart failure, which played an important role in the occurrence and development of cardiac dysfunction.
