LET'S RETHINK CRASH TECHNOLOGIES

In this essay, the author looks at crash avoidance and crash protection technologies and contends that a distinction between the two technologies isn't helpful. Rather, the author writes that what is most important is that advances in electronics and controllers will give opportunities for overlapping improvements to both technologies. The author notes that sensors are now capturing information during pre-crash maneuvers, and that while this information may help prevent crashes, it may also improve the performance of restraint systems. An example of how Mercedes-Benz has blended crash avoidance and crash protection technologies is briefly discussed.
