A Study on the Translation of The Women’s Kingdom in Jing Hua Yuan by Sinologist Hsin-chang Chang

In the mid-20th century, a group of sinologists made significant contributions to the spread of Chinese literature to the Western world. The British sinologist Hsin-chang Chang's English translation of The Women's Kingdom in Jing Hua Yuan played a unique role in the Chinese and Western cultural exchange. From a sociological perspective, a translator's habitus is accustomed to emphasizing the translator's subjectivity and individual choice of translation strategies. Taking C.H. Chang's English translation of The Women's Kingdom in Jing Hua Yuan as an example, this article explores the translator's subjectivity. Then it analyzes the critical social elements in the process, deepening the understanding of the translator's subjectivity and its role in the production of literary translation.
