Detailed petrological, geochemical and geochronological studies on rocks of the New England batholith of eastern Australia have resulted in a division into five suites, each identified by its own characteristic mineral assemblage and field relationships (for further background and bibliography see O'Neil et al., 1977). The suites have been named after their typical locations: Bundarra, Hillgrove, Moonbi, Uralla and Stanthorpe. With the exception of the Stanthorpe group, each suite can be described as having originated from either a sedimentary or igneous source: the S- and I-types of Chappell and White (1974). The Stanthorpe suite is composed of late-stage leucocratic granites with possible I-type affinities.
