Suicidal Ideation in Late Life

Abstract Suicidal ideation in late life represents a major public health concern and a critical problem for clinicians working with older adults. This chapter sets out, first of all, to define both passive and active suicidal ideation. Next, we discuss commonly used instruments designed to assess suicidal ideation. We then report prevalence rates for passive and active suicidal ideation among older adults. Next, we discuss known risk and protective factors for suicidal ideation in late life. Finally, we examine what is known about treating suicidal ideation among older adults.
