摘要
BACKGROUND: Frailty is an age-related biological syndrome, in the form of decreased physiological capacity and resistance to stressors due to accumulated decline in various physiological systems of the body. The classification of frailty syndrome is divided into robust, pre-frail and frail. One of the factors worsening frailty status is surgery. Benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) surgery is one of the most common operations in old age. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of BPH surgery with transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) on the frailty status of elderly patients.METHODS: A cross-sectional study involving elderly subjects with BPH. Frailty status was measured by the criteria used in Indonesia which consisted of resistance, activity, disease, walking effort and weight loss. Statistical analysis using the McNemar test statistic. The statistical test results are significant if the P value <0.05.RESULTS: Frailty status before surgery was robust for 14 subjects (32.6%), pre-frail for 16 subjects (37.2%) and frail for 13 subjects (30.2%). Evaluation after 30 days post TURP, subjects with robustness remained 14 subjects (32.6%), subjects with pre-frail became 15 subjects (34.9%) and frail subjects became 14 subjects (32.6%). This change was not statistically significant (P=0.317).CONCLUSIONS: TURP action does not worsen frailty status after 30 days of surgery.
