Study on Anticorrosion and Wear Resistance of Self-Healing Coating Based on Functional MXene and Dynamic Disulfide Bond

Further exploration of MXene’s potential in self-healing materials is promising, given its exceptional surface properties and adaptability to various modifications. In this study, the surface of MXene was functionalized with 2,5-diaminobenzenesulfonic acid (2,5-DBSFA) and 1-{3-[(N-n-butyl) aminoformamido] propyl}-3-cetyl imidazolium bromide (M16) successively, resulting in the successful preparation of functionalized MXene (f-MXene). It was added as an anticorrosion and wear-resistant filler to the self-healing epoxy resin coating with dynamic disulfide bonds, and the corrosion and friction behaviors of the coating were explored. Under heating at 170 °C for 10 min, the self-healing performance of the EP coating was significantly improved, with |Z|0.01Hz increasing from 6.77 × 106 to 1.54 × 108 Ω·cm2. This significant increase indicates that functionalized MXene can act as an effective repair agent in the EP matrix, working together with dynamic disulfide bonds to promote self-healing of microcracks or damage. Moreover, the tribological test results indicate that the addition of f-MXene not only enhances the self-healing ability but also improves the coating’s tribological properties. The introduction of f-MXene into the EP coating results in improved resistance to wear and friction, in which the average coefficient of friction decreased from 0.53 to 0.33 and wear rate has decreased 53.3%. This is attributed to the excellent mechanical and chemical properties of MXene, which can improve the stress distribution of the coating and form a self-lubricating film during friction.
