Quaternary ammonium chitosan-filter paper composite membranes were prepared by coating quaternary ammonium chitosan on filter paper and cross-linking with glutaraldehyde. Mechanical properties of the composite membranes and their application in adsorbing bilirubin were examined. The results showed that the composite membranes provided good mechanical properties. The adsorption capacity of composite membranes for bilirubin was higher than chitosan-filter paper composite membrane. The adsorption capacity was influenced by the degree of cross-linking and the degree of quaternization of chitosan. Adsorption equilibrium for bilirubin was arrived in 3 hours. The adsorption capacity decreased with ion strength and BSA concentration increasing.
