The classification of carbon material according to its structural characteristics of orientational mode and degree is presented in this paper.New developments in recent years of various carbon anode materials for lithium-ion batteries are reviewed.Main differences among graphite, coke and nongraphitic carbon in capacity, irreversible capacity losses,charge/discharge potentials and rates and their relation with the structures are analyzed. The possible intercalation mechanisms are briefly discussed.
