Coked catalyst in a fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) unit first passes to a stream stripper to remove residual volatiles and then it is transferred to the regenerator vessel where coke is burned in a stream of air. To determine how the yields and composition coke varies in FCC as a function of stripper conditions, tests have been conducted in fluidized-bed reactor using n-hexadecane at 500°C, a commercial FCC catalyst with stripping periods of up to 120 min. The demineralization-quantitative 13 C NMR methodology successively used previously on FCC refinery catalysts has been extended to cokes at similar concentrations (1% w/w).
