Introduction: During rest the human brain toggles between different stages of vigilance. Decline from alertness to sleep-onset is a transition with complex changes in the pattern of spectral composition and topography of EEG activity. For resting conditions with eyes closed EEG-vigilance stages and typical patterns of EEG-vigilance regulation have been identified. Although some components of EEG-vigilance are influenced by internal and external factors (i.e. sleep deficit or psychoactive drugs), EEG-vigilance regulation in general seems to be a stable individual trait.
