Risk Factors Portending a Total Hip Arthroplasty for Patients Who Have Osteonecrosis of the Femoral Head

Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) poses a substantial burden to orthopaedic surgeons. However, the exact risk attributed by each specific patient factor for those who end up receiving a total hip arthroplasty (THA) are not well known. We assessed: (1) patient demographics (age and sex); (2) blood cell dyscrasias (sickle-cell disease and hypercoagulable states); and (3) substance use (oral corticosteroid use, tobacco use, and alcohol abuse).
