Purpose:To determine the efficacy of and the mechanism for treating postmenopausal osteoporosis with a combination of physical exercise and traditional Chinese medicine(TCM),in order to provide a theoretical basis for improving the prevention and treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis through this method.Method:A total of 30,seven-month-old,female rats were randomly divided into five groups. These were:Ovariectomized Group(S),Ovariectomized and Combination of Swimming Exercise and TCM Group(SM)and the Control Group(C).On the seventh day following ovariectomy(for all groups save Group C),treatment began for the M,S and SM Groups. On the seventieth day, blood serum was taken from all of the rats and examined for Ca,P,ALP,and StrACP levels. Results:No significant differences were found in serum levels of Ca and P for all groups(P0.05).ALP levels in the SM,M,S and C Groups were all higher than in the OVX Group, with significant diference(P0.05).StrACP in the S,M and SM Groups were all lower than in the OVX Group, with significant difference(P0.05).Conclusion:The combination of physical exercise and TCM(Ying Yang Huo)is a more effective method of treatment for postmenopausal osteoporosis than exercise-only or TCM-only methods of treatment. The mechanism for its efficacy is that this form of therapy helps to improve bone formation, while halting bone reabsorption.
