Objective To research expression and distribution of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) in periodontium by establishing orthodontic tooth movement model of rabbits and to analyze the role of bFGF in orthodontic tooth movement. Methods The orthodontic tooth movement model of rabbits was established. 10g,50g and 100g forces were respectively exerted on the three experimental groups until the animals were executed one week later. Then,the first molar and periodontium specimens were taken out,and immunohistochemical staining (HI-SABC method) was performed and the results were compared. Results The staining result of the control group was weakly positive. A significant difference was only found between the 50g force group and the control group among the multiple comparisons. Conclusion Suitable orthodontic force could enhance expression of bFGF in the periodontium. bFGF may participate in orthodontic tooth movement and promote the repairing and rebuilding of the periodontium.
