Encapsulation of pigments with polymers can protect them from agglomeration, improve weathering resistance of pigments and increase the application properties. The organic pigments with azo structure were encapsulated with polystyrene and polyacrylates via miniemulsion polymerization. The dispensability of organic pigments(P.Y.65,P.Y.73,P.Y.14 and P.Y.83) in water and monomers after ultrasonic emulsification were evaluated. With ultrasonication time prolonging, the particle size of pigment dispersions decreased. For 30 min ultrasonication, the particle size of P.Y.14 and P.Y.83 dispersions in water was smaller than that of P.Y.65 and P.Y.73.The particle size of pigment dispersed in styrene was smaller than that in acrylates. The stability of P.Y.83/monomer dispersion was the better.but the stability of P.Y.65/monomer dispersion was the worse, large amounts of monomer floated on the liquid layer. The encapsulation ratios and efficiency of P.Y.83 with polymers were both higher than that of P.Y.65.The encapsulation ratio of polyacrylate(PMA,PBA) was higher those that of polymethacrylate(PMMA,PBMA).
