Purpose The rise of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools has presented both possibilities and perils. This research aims to examine how digital leaders build organizational readiness, overcome challenges and achieve successful AI implementation and integration transformation. Design/methodology/approach The authors conduct a systematic review of the literature at the crossroads of digital leadership and generative AI. A total of 181 papers were obtained from Scopus (2021–2025) based on the search keywords “digital leadership,” “generative AI,” “AI-driven workflows” and “AI integration leadership.” The search was limited by means of Boolean operators (AND/OR). To explore common themes among the studies, a thematic synthesis of the material was conducted. Findings The results highlight the role of digital leadership in instituting generative AI as an element of organizational routines. Digital companies use a combination of AI–human systems. It enhances recruitment and customer experience by promoting sustainability and ethical governance. The findings highlight the importance of modular frameworks, AI models that can be interpreted and adaptive leadership. Generative AI is reshaping the worker relationship through automation and enhanced decision-making, and leaders should be held more responsible for inclusivity and displacement. Effective leadership further enables organizations to create value, strengthen supply chains and build long-term competitive advantage. Originality/value This paper offers a new perspective for comprehending digital leadership on managing generative AI in organizations. It thus addresses the gap between AI adoption and leadership strategy by offering theoretical insights and practical advice for dealing with disruption from AI and building competitive advantage in a digital age.
