Left ventricular remodeling is the process by which ventricular size, shape, and function are regulated by different mechanical, neurohormonal, and genetic factors. Matrix metalloproteinases is an important proteinase family which is primary mediator to degrade the extracellular matrix. The normal expression of matrix metalloproteinases and a appropriate MMPs/TIMPs( tissue inhibitors of the matrix metalloproteinases) ratio are important factors to maintain natural cardiac structure. In recent years, many studies have found that traditional Chinese medicine made some progress through many channels, multiple targets for comprehensive intervention in the occurrence of ventricular remodeling after myocardial infarction development, effectively reversal or improve the ventricular remodeling, and further research of MMPs would provide the new theory basis for clinical practice.
