X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to examine the surfaces of vacuum-fractured lithium borate glasses with compositions of xLi2O−(1−x)B2O3 for x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 and the vapor-deposited thin-film LiBO2. Binding energies for the Li 1s, B 1s and O 1s peaks have been determined, referenced to the Au4f7/2 peak of a thin gold overlayer. The Li/LiBO2 interface was investigated by a sequence of depositions of lithium onto a LiBO2 surface followed by in situ XPS scans. Observed changes in XPS spectra of the interface region provide evidence of compositional and structural changes within the lithium borate film as a result of the lithium deposition.
