In the 1950 film, Sunset Boulevard, Norma Desmond, a great movie star of a bygone silent picture era, is reduced to a pathetic, narcissistic figure when her fans withdraw their support of her. When the man she loves walks out on her, she summarizes the movie's premise before shooting him: 'No one ever leaves a star, that's what makes one a star.'
