The oxygen consumption of red sea bream Pagrosomus major under different conditions were measured and studied. The results are showed as follows:That the higher the water temperature is, the higher the oxygen consumption rate of Pagrosomus major is. At 19 ℃ and body weight 120.6~132.4g, the rate of oxygen consumption is 2.677μg/(g·min);At 29 ℃ , the rate of oxygen consumption is 5.841μg/(g·min).The oxygen consumption of Pagrosomus major increases as its weight increases, and the oxygen consumption of Pagrosomus major drops as its weight decreasing. There are same changes in the oxygen consumption rate of the Pagrosomus major between day and night.Under conditions where pH=7.4, S‰=21 and the water temperature is 19 ℃ ,Pagrosomus major (x 129.5g) has the maximum oxygen consumption of (3.877±0.257)μg/(g·min) when it is 17∶00 and the minimum oxygen consumption of (1.031± 0.255 )μg/(g·min) when it is 7∶00.The average of oxygen consumption is 2.162μg/(g·min)and 2.271 μg/(g·min) respectively under day and night, the metabolism rate has little variation between day and night.
