摘要
This article introduces the Motivation-Integrated Needs Theory (MINT). MINT unifies existing theories into a three-level structure that distinguishes (a) core needs—universal psychological needs for security, acceptance, initiative, competence, and meaning which serve as the foundation of motivations; (b) basic motivations such as power, belonging, and achievement; and (c) contextual motivations—domain- and role-specific patterns of striving in everyday life that change throughout the lifespan and shape people’s goals and behaviors. Grounded in developmental theory, MINT explains how early-formed needs and their calibration shape motivation across childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. The theory specifies how perceived satisfaction of core needs is evaluated through a standards architecture involving current, expected, ideal-real, and fantasy ideal levels of need satisfaction, and how discrepancies among these levels generate motivational intensity and shape the choice of motivational routes. By specifying the underlying structure that connects needs and motivations, MINT helps explain why people are motivated in some contexts and not in others, why they lose motivation, and why they behave differently across situations.
