Beyond-Group-Chats as a Platform for Online Ethnic Communities

Abstract Studies have explored the concepts and functions of online communities and ethnic communities in the context of digitalization and migration. However, with increasing cross-border population flow and the widespread use of social media, the functions of these communities have evolved. This study examined an online platform targeting overseas Chinese, employing participant observation, questionnaires, and interviews to analyze its operational model and communication features. Our findings revealed that the platform meets the diverse needs of participants while exhibiting features that go beyond online communities or traditional ethnic communities. As an online ethnic community, participants spontaneously gather in virtual spaces based on their cultural identities, facilitating free access to information and mutual support. This phenomenon reflects a new trend among diaspora groups in the digital age. This study revealed the interaction patterns and operational dynamics of the platform, offering insights into the evolution of online ethnic communities.
