There is an urgent need to identify patients who are at risk of developing non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), defined using liver histology as a non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) activity score of 4 or more and a fibrosis stage of 2 or more. Traditional, non-invasive tests have been developed to identify either NASH or advanced fibrosis, such as cytokeratin-18 (CK-18) fragments M30 and M65, the enhanced liver fibrosis score, the fibrosis-4 score, and the NAFLD fibrosis score.
