Though in the mass spectrometer for analytical use, tungsten filaments are usually carbonized to stabilize sensitivity and pattern coefficient, the stabilizing.effect of the carbonization has not been fully elucidated yet. We carbonized tungsten wire and ribbon with butene-2 and investigated the relation between the carbonizing conditions and the structure of tungsten carbides formed.For this analysis both the electron and the X-ray diffraction were used. The results obtained indicate that α-W2C is formed by a moderate treatment with butene-2, while WC is formed by a prolonged treatment.
