Diagnosis and treatment of ureteropelvic junction obstruction caused by fibroepithelial polyps in children

Objective To investigate the diagnosis and treatment of ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) caused by fibroepithelial polyps in children.Methods The clinical data of 33 children (male 32 and female 1,age range 5 to 14 years,mean 9 years) with UPJO caused by fibroepithelial polyps were retrospectively analyzed.The polyps of ureter were on the left side in 27,bilateral in 1,and right in 5.Duration of symptoms varied from 1 month to 5 years (mean 1.6 years). Results Thirty patients underwent dismembered pyeloplasty and the other 3 with ureteroureterostomy.All lesions were characterized microscopically by polypoid projections of fibrous tissue covered by epithelium.IVP indicated hydronephrosis dismissed after 6-12 months.No recurrence was seen during follow-up of 6 months to 18 years.Conclusions Fibroepithelial polyps is one of the rare lesions that cause ureteropelvic junction obstruction in children.Dismembered pyeloplasty and ureteroureterostomy can get the satisfactory results for children with fibroepithelial polyps.
