Obesity has been increasing at an alarming rate, imposing a severe socio-economic burden on the health care system currently. Several obesity management strategies include but are not limited to using drugs, a plethora of plant extracts, and nutraceutical supplements, independently or in combination. However, obesity management has been a challenge until now, primarily due to the adverse effects induced by therapeutic molecules. Therefore, a growing need exists to develop novel therapeutic candidates that contribute to fat loss and help manage healthy body weight with no or minimal side effects. Several medicinal plant-derived nutrients have shown efficacy in healthy body weight management. In this context, we present a safe, novel, and highly efficacious natural plant-based composition, LN19183 (TheoLim™), comprising Citrus aurantifolia fruit rind and Theobroma cacao seed extracts. A series of in vitro cell-based experiments, animal studies, and a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, cross-over human study demonstrate that LN19183 is a synergistic, non-stimulant botanical blend that increases energy expenditure associated with enhanced fat oxidation and increased fat loss.
