Status epilepticus is a neurological disorder involving prolonged seizures, or repeated seizures without full recovery in between. Many cases respond to anticonvulsants, but in some, seizures continue, and this is described as refractory status epilepticus (RSE). In the most severe and treatment resistant cases, seizures still occur, even with administration of anesthetics. This state, super refractory status epilepticus (SRSE), is the most difficult to clinically manage, and has high mortality.
