The degree of coke desulfurization during carbonization is defined by the residual sulfur index K/sub s/, which depends on the grade constitution of the carbonizing blend and tends to decrease as the proportion of gas coals is increased. Carbonization does not decrease the sulfur content of the coke in direct relation to temperature, but the residual sulfur content is a characteristic of the particular coal. The sulfur content of the charge does have some effect on the K/sub s/ values with high-sulfur blends producing lower K/sub s/ values. The sulfur distribution in various coals originating in Russia both before and after carbonization are discussed.
