A discussion of an earlier paper with the aforementioned title by M. Johansson and K. Gylltoft, published in this journal (Volume 128, Number 8, August 2002), is presented. The discusser poses 2 questions relating to certain aspects of the original authors' work: the first inquires as to why the concrete-filled steel tube stub columns have so little compressive strength increase due to confinement effects, while the second addresses whether or not the force carried by the steel tube in SFE columns maintained ~40% of the total applied load in all the postpeak range.
