Abstract Water scarcity is a pressing issue in developing nations, where clean water is crucial for various purposes, such as domestic use, agriculture, industrial processes, and energy generation. Contaminants in pristine water compromise its quality, making it unfit for human consumption. We need sustainable and environmentally conscious remediation techniques to combat water pollution. Photocatalysis is a promising method that is both environmentally sustainable and economically viable, demonstrating remarkable efficiency. This advanced oxidation method has significant potential for wastewater treatment, and the rapid advancement in the field, especially in the development of innovative photocatalysts, has made it a leading edge in sustainable wastewater treatment solutions. By adopting photocatalysis, we can mitigate the negative effects of water pollution and ensure a sustainable future for our planet. This review explores photocatalysis's use for sustainable wastewater treatment, focusing on eco‐friendly photocatalyst synthesis, contaminants removal advancements, challenges that arise when research meets practice, reactor design, and strategies for improving results. The author eventually presents potential ideas and reaches conclusions. This review presents insights that researchers can leverage to develop high‐efficiency, low‐cost, and sustainable photocatalysis aimed at enhancing wastewater treatment processes.
