Abstract The behaviour of an yttria-stabilized zirconia electrode in the PbCl2KCl melt has been investigated at 475°C. The response of the electrode is Nernstian and permits its use in the titration of Mg(II) with oxide ions. We have observed that the PbCl2KCl melt is more acidic than the LiClKCl eutectic melt and less than ZnCl22NaCl, as well as that that mixture can be purified by the removal of oxide ions with gaseous reagents such as HCl and Cl2.
