Developmental dyslexia is an important issue for human health and development. For many years, researchers have attempted to find out the cause of dyslexia. They hope to solve the problem of reading impairment and to eliminate dyslexia from its origin. However, researchers found that the dyslexic group is heterogeneous. This paper introduced the two most representative theories in explaining the cause of dyslexia, and some relevant research evidence. Then, the authors focused on the historical development of the dyslexic subtypes. The classification of various subtypes and the differences between subtypes in reading skills, sensory and cognitive processing, and neurological basis were discussed. Moreover, the function of subtype identification in the early prediction of the disorder was examined. This provides a new point of view in eliminating dyslexia.
